Wow! How did I get here?! My name is Beth Patterson. I’m a wife, a mother of 4 crazy kids, and I have a degree in elementary education, so how in the world did I end up baking custom cakes for a living?! I have always loved to bake, but for many, many, MANY years I made the most delicious and ugliest cakes you’ve ever seen. Seriously! I couldn’t make a cake look good to save my life. In fact, I had a curt, little saying about my cakes. I would tell people that incredibly beautiful cakes are like incredibly beautiful women. There’s a lot going on the outside, but not a lot going on the inside! So my cakes maybe ugly, but they taste GOOD! Well, I guess I’m eating my words now!!!
Really I’m where I am because of God’s favor in my life. In January of 2009, I took the 1st Wilton cake class with my mother and my sister at Joann’s Fabrics in Pensacola, FL. Every Monday night, for 6 weeks, we’d drive for an hour to learn basic cake decorating skills like leveling a cake, frosting a cake, and piping simple borders and flowers. I was so excited on our final night of class when I made rose after rose perfectly
And that’s when I knew I could build a business out of this….. WRONG!!! I was just happy that I could finally make my kids a half-decent birthday cake! I was so thrilled with all that I was learning, that I posted pictures of my cake creations on Facebook. And for the next year I made cute cakes with the help of my sister for our children’s birthdays, between the 2 of us we have 6 kids so we had plenty of practice. But I still didn’t even consider doing it for a living, not even for a second.
It wasn’t until March of 2010, 1 year after taking that one-and-only, basic Wilton class that something changed. A dear friend of mine asked me to recreate a pretty complicated cake that she found online. I was confident that I could make the topsy-turvy, candy themed cake, but after hours of of sculpting and covering and RE-COVERING the cake with fondant, I was ready to throw the cake against the wall! At 10:00 at night, I went out to my front yard to lay in the grass to look at the stars and calm down. Every ounce of my being wanted to make that cake exactly as requested, but my mind had finally accepted the fact that that just wasn’t possible. So with a heavy heart, I went inside to take the topsy-turvy out of the cake
I’m glad I listened to my gut, because even though it was just a normal 3-tiered, stacked cake, it turned out spectacularly well. Was my friend upset that the cake wasn’t all wonky? Oh no! She was so thrilled with her cake that her Facebook profile picture was changed to a picture of her fabulous cake! The fact that she believed in me enough to ask me to do a cake, made me think that I could do this for real!
So for the last year, I’ve been making cakes for family and friends. It was just something fun to do on the side. I never advertised at all. I just posted pictures on Facebook, because people really seemed to enjoy looking at my cakes. God did the rest! In the last year, I’ve made over 80 cakes for my family, friends, and now more and more, friends-of-friends-of-friends! I’m in awe of all that God has done for me, from the simple fact that He has given me such a wonderful talent, to opening doors for me to have a full-fledged business in my hometown. All I can say is Yay God!!!

That cake was AMAZING, I’ve shown people at work pictures before, and is always the one I go to whenever someone mentions needing a cake.
Now you have to figure out how to ship those things, just so I can be lazy and eat good cake on my couch
hi
your cakes are amazing! i actually had a question about how you got started- did you have to get a license or do a bunch of legal stuff to be allowed to make cakes in your own home? i’m just asking because i just started making fancy cakes for some friends and would love to do this kind of thing casually on the side, but not enough to go full time and hop through a lot of hoops and certifications and junk. But when i researched it, that’s what it sounded like :-/. you can send me a message on Facebook if you have time– if not, thanks anyway!! all your cakes are very inspiring!
Hi Mrs Lola,

I ordered cupcakes for my nieces’ sweet 16. Those were absolutely the best cupcakes all the way around, looks, presentation, and especially taste. Everyone at the party agreed. I loved the Ocean themed butter recipe the best while my niece loved the red velvet. I will definately be ordering from you again amd tellimg everyone I know that they should too.
Thanks for being a good baker,
Lani
