Angry Birds Birthday Cake with slingshot and rubble on the pigs

Fast forward 2.5 years and I receive a call at my cake shop for an Angry Birds birthday cake. Let me tell you about it.

It was for a little boy and his father who are both obsessed with Angry Birds.  The mother bought in a picture she found online and I adpated it to make it my own. Incorporating the various colored birds from the game (green, red, white, blue, black, yellow), the slingshot, and the evil green King pig and his minions. The most challenging part for me was to try to capture the sunrise from the game.  I thought of using 2 layers of fondant to capture the color but ended up choosing to paint the cake instead for this.

The end result was even better than I had envisioned in my head.  The mom, dad, and kid ended up picking up the cake together and they were thrilled when they saw it.  The boy was jumping up and down he was so happy.  They were actually taking the cake to field day at their elementary school to share with their class.  I can only imagine how his class responded when he brought this surprise cake in. I have a feeling the kids were fighting over who got to keep/eat the figures.  I wonder if he’s the coolest kid in class now? I think he is

Supreme Pizza birthday cake with all of the toppings

How do you think it turned out? I took the time to actually shred the white fondant into a cheese grater to give the pizza that realistic look. The mushrooms, pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, black olives, and meatballs were carefully crafted to match the appearance of their real life counterpart. Thanks to Mia’s Italian Restaurant here locally I was able to get a pizza box that was generic and just said “From your Neighborhood Pizzeria”. (By the way, this Italian restaurant has amazing cheese sticks).

To achieve the desired appearance of a deep dish pizza crust, I added a light layer of graham cracker crumbs to the frosting around the edge to give the look of a garlic pizza crust. I wonder if the little girl was surprised when she took the first bite and realized it was a delicious tasting butter cake with vanilla buttercream frosting? Caitlin (that’s the birthday girl ) drew this in class one day when she was bored.  She said it was her dream, 13th birthday cake.  She kept the sketch.  Her mom had to sneak it out of her room so I could see it.  (Who says nothing good comes from daydreaming in class?! )

When it came time to pick up the cake, mom brought Caitlin along to surprise her.  As Caitlin was jumping up and down, squealing over her cake, she stopped, looked at her mom in confusion, and asked, “Then, why did we just buy a cake from Walmart?”  That’s right, Caitlin’s mom bought a decoy cake.  Now that’s commitment!

This was one of my absolute favorite cakes to make.  I felt so privileged to be included in the surprise.  Oh and I told Caitlin to come see me in 3 years, because I could put her talent to good use!!!

I have several friends with gluten allergies that are following a Paleo lifestyle.  One friend in particular, Ms. Heather Green, was especially bummed that she could no longer enjoy any of Lolo’s delicious cupcakes.    Being the people-pleaser that I am, I set off on a quest to make a delicious gluten-free cupcake!  And I succeeded!  So we now offer gluten-free options in chocolate and vanilla.  The really good news is that pretty much all of my frostings are gluten-free, so no change was necessary there! 

So if you have a dietary restrictions, and still want a yummy cake or cupcake, just let me know and I will do everything I can to make it happen for you!

Cupcake Comparison Chart

Here is a quick idea of the unique ingredients used in these specialty cupcakes/cakes:

Gluten free ingredients: rice flour, tapioca flour, & xanthum gum

Dairy Free: Soy margarine and rice milk

Sugar free: Splenda replaces sugar

Organic: All ingredients are certified organic. The main reason the cost is so much higher is that the ingredients must be bought in small quantities to insure freshness.

I just thought I’d share a collection of baby shower cakes that features my friend the giraffe.  Go ahead and try to make it through this blog without saying (or thinking) AWWWWW….  I dare you!

I know there are other animals on this cake, but that little giraffe is just so stinking cute! I love it!

I know you’re all wondering what awesomeness I will be rocking tonight, so here it is!  I’m Betty “Skull” Cracker member of the Sugar & Slice Derby Girls.  Oh and my husband, he’s our coach Da Muffin Man!

Oh yeah, I'm a hard core baker! LOL! Happy Halloween!!!

After 6 months of hearing about this, my curiosity got the better of me. So for Father’s day, I woke up, before the sun, and dragged myself to do some insane workout at 6:00 on a Sunday! (For those of you who are asking yourselves “What is CrossFit?” Let me tell you, it’s hard to explain, but basically the idea is to push yourself harder than you ever have before, doing strange exercises that make muscles, you didn’t know existed in the human body, feel like they’d been put in a meat grinder. At least that’s my definition! ) So I spent the next hour stepping up on boxes, doing sit ups with the assistance of a gigantic rubber band, doing push ups and running more than I had run in years! It took everything I had to 1. finish 2. not cry and 3. not throw rocks at all the fit people who kept saying “good job” as they lapped me for the 1 millionth time! But I survived, and the next WEEK I was so sore that I literally thought I would die from it. It was then that I decided to not waste this sore. I was tired of having a marshmallow center, so I went back again, and again and again! I’ve been going for about 4 months now, and the difference in my strength, endurance and just the quality of my life has increased tremendously!

Now you’re probably wondering what in the world this has to do with cake, well I’m getting there! You see the random guy whose backyard my husband and I now workout in, isn’t a random guy at all. His name is Stephen Dalton, and he has a passion for living a healthy life and sharing his passion with others. He has a shed full of wacky exercise equipment like wall balls, kettle bells and ab-mats. And for months, he opened up his “home” (aka backyard) to anyone who wanted to come and get a killer workout through CrossFit for free! So when his birthday began to approach and our little CrossFit family began planning a surprise party for him, I jumped at the opportunity to make him a Crossfit cake. I wanted an opportunity to say thank you for all that he had done for me and my family.

You see, I still don’t enjoy exercising. The “endorphin high” is totally wasted on me. I don’t sweat very much, so I overheat, I have a bad back, and arthritis; I basically have the joints of an 80 year old! But I love the people that have become a part of my life through CrossFit, they have literally become part of my family and I love them all dearly! And Stephen, our fearless leader, our Captain Kool-aid, brought us all together. So once again, thank you Stephen! I hope you enjoyed being immortalized in cake! See you in the morning!

By the way, if you want to join us, our group was featured in the North West Florida Daily News, it’s at 3003 Colonial Circle at 5am or 5pm Monday, Wednesday or Friday. (Saturday at 6am also). This is my dear friend Stephanie. She's doing box jumps. In real life, she's skinny and gorgeous and the rest of us are jealous of the fact that she eats Big Macs and still wears a size 2 so everyone calls her Skinny B. (I can's say what the B stands for )

Now this hottie is my very own husband. He is the master of double unders. He once did 1000 at one time. Why you might ask. I have no idea!

See that top saying? Well, that is Stephen's catch phrase. He says it at every WOD (that CrossFit for workout of the day) even if there aren't any burpees involved!

This is Mr. Pukey. He tries to pay a call to everyone who does CrossFit, though not everyone gives into him! He's not our favorite person! Lol!

First since I live in Florida we shall start with a Florida team!  Go Noles!
