Are You Ready for Some College Football Cakes!

So I guess college football season started a few weeks ago or something.  😉  I know this because my FB news feed was bombarded with “Roll Tides” and “Go Gators” and “Noles!” and “Fly Peacocks!”  (I may have made up one or two of those 🙂  )  Any way,  my recent cake orders also illustrated the start of football season.  So for all you pig skin lovers out there (and I don’t mean the kind you get in a plastic bag!  Mmmm….. pork rinds!) here is a parade of college football cakes!

First since I live in Florida we shall start with a Florida team!  Go Noles!

Mer really wanted a sports themed baby shower cake in FSU colors for her friend's co-ed baby shower.

I know it also has baseballs and basketballs, but it was the only Florida cake I had!

Since I practically live in Alabama (it’s only 20 minutes away!) and I have gotten WAY more requests for Alabama teams, here are the representatives for AL!

We can’t forget about old LSU!  My husband almost went to school there 🙂  If he had, he’d say something like “Geaux Tigers!”  when he saw this cake!

Yep that's a cake!

So I wrote this blog and I keep getting more requests for college football cakes.  I keep adding more and postponing finishing the blog.  Well, I’m done, I know I’ll probably get more requests for something college football related next week but I don’t care!  😉  Here are a few more cakes to root for!

The Many Cakes of Merideth! (My biggest fan :)

I have some pretty awesome people in my life, cheering me on as I endeavor to conquer the world of cake.  But no one has quite “put their money where their mouth is” quite like my dear friend Merideth!

Seriously, besides my husband and maybe my business roomate, Ms. Sheena Ratliff of Lensflare Photography, I can’t think of anyone who is more supportive of my caking career than Miss Mer-bear!  The funny thing is that I have known Merideth since I was a teenager.  Our paths crossed a lot growing up, she was my cousin’s girlfriend at one point and we also played softball together in high school, but we didn’t get to be friends until my husband joined the fitness cult of Crossfit!  (I’m kidding!  I love Crossfit…. ok I tolerate Crossfit 😉 )  Because my husband is my number one fan, and because he talks A LOT about me and my cakes, when Merideth needed a baby shower cake, she couldn’t wait to ask me to make one for her.

Well that was the beginning of Merideth’s cake obsession!  She has requested 4, that’s right, FOUR cakes from me in a ridiculously short period of time, and every time I see her she’s looking for another excuse to get a cake.  Sadly, for me, Merideth is soon joining the Army and moving away from my little corner of the world.  😦  I will miss her and her infectious laugh, but I look forward to making at least one more cake for her to wish her a fond farewell on her new adventure in life.

Wow!  That got kind of sad!  Sorry, not my intention at all.  What I really wanted to do was to celebrate my dear friend, and share all the masterpieces that I’ve gotten to create for her!  First the baby shower cake that started them all, and incidentally made Merideth cry tears of joy when I delivered it!

Merideth must have some seriously fertile friends, because the second cake she wanted was another baby shower cake.  This time it was for a baby girl whose room is decorated in brown and pink.  So I tried to give her something match it!

This feels like a baby fashion cake to me! Love it!!!

I just love the little booties! They're just so precious 🙂

Then Merideth’s own birthday was approaching, and incidentally she shares her birthday with one of her close friends.  So she began planning a gigantic birthday bash to celebrate and have more cake!  But sometimes life likes to take the wind out of our sails, and sadly Merideth decided to cancel the big birthday blow out.  But her friend wasn’t about to let her big day go uncelebrated.  So her sweet friend Beth, whose husband shares a birthday with Merideth, took the original cake order and made it her own.  Since her husband is a firefighter, she wanted a birthday cake featuring the firefighter’s Maltese cross.  The cake was based off a picture that Merideth and Beth found online.  The flames…. well they were my idea. 😀

I love the patriotic detailing on this Maltese cross!

Fire!!! Lol!

If you’re counting, you’ll notice that’s only three cakes, and at the beginning of this blog, I said Merideth got four cakes from me.  Well, the final cake was for Merideth!  She had kindly gotten so many cakes for her friends, that I was thrilled to finally make a cake for her.  As I’m writing this Merideth is currently relaxing away in Hawaii.  So in honor of her tropical vacation, I made Mer her very own hula girl cake.  Now don’t let the picture fool you.  This is a mini cake.  Just enough for the birthday girl!

So Merideth, I hope you know that I love you, and I thank God for you and the way you believe in me.  And I hope you loved your cake!  Come home soon 🙂

A Whale of a 1st birthday smash cake!

Someone once asked me if it’s difficult for me to let people cut up my cakes, because they are my works of art.  And I gave her a big resounding Nope!  My cakes were made to be eaten, because, in my humble opinion, they taste even better than they look.  And they look pretty, stinking good!

But to make a cake for the purpose of being SMASHED?!!  Yep, that’s right I said smashed!  Most of the time it’s not so difficult, because I usually make pretty simple cakes for my little one-year-old cake monsters.  But not this one, nope, this was one of the cutest, sweetest, ooey-est cakes I’ve ever made.  And I have to admit, it was a little hard to send this baby away knowing it was going to be clobbered by a little toddler man.

I didn’t get to meet that little guy, but he must have realized how very hard I worked on his beautiful little whale smash cake.  Because I heard through the grapevine, that he ate his cake so gingerly, that everyone at the party had a piece of whale!  😉

His and Hers Harley-Davidson….. Cakes!

I love it when I get to make cakes for people that I’ve known for most of my life.  Several months ago, a friend from middle school contacted me, because she wanted to get a special cake for the special man in her life.

Mitzi and Myron love riding their Harleys, so a Harley-Davidson cake was a must for Myron’s 50th birthday!  When I think of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, I think of clean lines, sleek bodies, and of course FIRE!  So I wanted to incorporate those things into Myron’s cake.

Myron's 50th Harley Davidson birthday cake!

As things usually go in life, when I was finished with Myron’s cake, I moved on to the next task at hand, and didn’t think much more about it.  But a few weeks ago on Thursday morning, I got a frantic phone call from Myron telling me that he needed a cake for Mitzi’s birthday party on Saturday!  Someone must have been doing some serious praying, because I actually had a light cake load that week.  So with only 2 days notice, I was able to make a cake for Mitzi, too.

Now not to be outdone by Myron’s cake, I had to come up with a similar design, because Mitzi loves her Harley just as much as Myron does.  So I took the Harley cake to a whole, new level….. a super, GIRLY level!  I had to keep the flames but instead of orange, I made them PINK!  and added some bling to make it even better.  From what I hear, it was right up Mitzi’s alley.

Love the pink flames! And the sparkly border 🙂

*Note to the fellas!  Requesting a cake 2 days before you need it is a very dangerous gamble.  Myron got lucky.  You may not.  Book your wife/girlfriend’s cake early!!! 😉

Shark week in cake!

So I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have been surrounded by all things Shark Week this past week.  I swear that everywhere I turn there it is…. on Facebook, on Google, on my iPhone (thanks hubby for the “Learn Sharks” app you downloaded), and of course on our tv.   I personally am not interested in seeing animals being mangled by sharks, but my kids (and the rest of the planet) seem to be fascinated by it.

So in honor of the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, here is a Jaws cake that I made for my nephew’s 7th birthday.  (Big props go out to my sister for her help on this cake!)

Jaws birthday Cake for shark week

G rated Jaws cake 🙂

The scuba diver and 50+ shark teeth along with all the ocean creatures made the small cake very complex and time consuming.  Well over 10 hours were invested in this birthday cake, but the investment was well worth it, because the end result was spectacular!  And the birthday boy was thrilled with his cake!  So was his little brother who took a chunk out of the cake when we weren’t looking!  But I guess that’s pretty appropriate for a Jaws cake!

What kind of cake would you think would capture the essence of Shark Week?

Western Cowgirl Sweet 16 Birthday Cake! YEEHAW!!!!

I love doing Sweet 16 cakes.  Especially when a girl ventures out of the status quo, and does something unique and off-beat!  And I have to say this is one of those cakes!

I mean don’t get me wrong, I love the current trend of animal prints and bright colors (i.e. zebra stripes and hot pink), but it’s getting difficult to come up with new and creative ways to make those cakes!  Now I will be honest, when I first saw the cake that my client wanted, with it’s country-western cowboy design, I wasn’t too thrilled.  But like I do most of the time when a client brings me a picture of a cake that they found online, I tweaked it and changed it to make it my own 🙂  The more I worked on this cake design, the more I fell in love with it.

Now the original design had the three tiers of denim, red bandana, black and white cow hide.  My client really wanted to have her daughter’s name incorporated into the cake somehow.  Well, I felt like I had an epiphany.  What better way to display someone’s name on a Country-western birthday cake, then with a big, ol’ belt buckle!!!  I was so excited.  I didn’t even tell my client because I wanted to see the look on her face when she saw my work of pure genius! 😉  Here’s the sketch of Jayde’s cake.

The actual Texas style cake came out even more spectacularly than the sketch!  And of course the cake tasted just as good as it looked.  The flavors were chocolate butter cake with chocolate and vanilla buttercream and marshmallow fondant.  I always love a girl who loves chocolate!  Yeehaw!!!

Flaming Phoenix Birthday Cake!

I think it’s rather apropos to feature a phoenix (the bird, not the city) cake on the weekend of the opening of the final Harry Potter movie: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.  You know since Dumbledore had a phoenix…..  You know…..Fawkes……  You know what…. I’m kind of a dork!  Oh well, I’m ok with that!  🙂

My dear friend Erica has a beautiful, quirky daughter named Emma.  Emma has been sketching and dreaming about her birthday cake since I made her brother a Mini Cooper cake for his 7th birthday back in January.  That’s 7 months, people!  And when you’re turning 11, that’s almost an eternity to wait for your very own custom birthday cake.

Originally, the cake was supposed to be for both Emma and her brother Avery since their birthdays are so close together.  But Emma sweet talked (or threatened, I’m not sure which) her brother into letting her have creative license with the cake.  Have I mentioned how much I love Emma?!  I’d totally steal her if her parents would let me!  So she wanted either a dragon cake or a phoenix cake.  She and her mom perused Google and found a picture of a cake that they liked, and I tweaked it to make it my own. 🙂   Not to toot my own horn, but the resulting cake came out even better than I’d envisioned it!  I love it when that happens.  😀

Emma enjoyed her brother’s triple chocolate cake so much, that she wanted that flavor, too!  So she got a triple chocolate birthday cake with vanilla buttercream and marshmallow fondant.  The phoenix is made of gumpaste and the feathers and plumage are made of fondant.

Oh Brother! Two Crazy Custom Birthday Cakes!!!

This is a warning.  The birthday cakes you are about to see came from the brains of babes.  They’re a little out-there, a little odd, even a little schizophrenic! 😉 But most of all these babies were CUSTOM!!!

A couple of weeks ago I met with a new friend of mine, the lovely Mrs. Kimberly Hobbs, owner of Cafe Liquid in Niceville Florida,  at [gasp] Starbucks.  We were meeting to discuss birthday cakes for both of her sons, J who’s 11 and C who’s 7, and boy-oh-boy, do these boys know what they like, well except for Mr. C– he likes EVERYTHING!!!

J was a little more organized.  He wanted to incorporate three of his favorite interests:  the University of Alabama, Tae kwon do (he has a camo belt), and reading, specifically his 3 favorite books– Lord of the Rings, How to Train Your Dragon (I didn’t realize that was a book! Lol), and The 39 Clues.  So I thought a cake with sculpted books for a base with a 2nd tier featuring Alabama and Tae kwon do would be pretty easy to accomplish without looking too crazy.  With a plan in mind for a Alabama/Tae kwon do/book enthusiast cake, I turned to hear what C wanted.

But Mr. C, he wanted a little bit of everything on his cake.  First, he also wanted to incorporate Tae kwon do (he too has a camo belt), along with Super Mario Brothers, How to Train your Dragon, and Lego Star Wars….. whew!  Oh and when his brother said University of Alabama, Little C started telling me what sports team he wanted, too!  I tried, I really did, but I couldn’t figure out how to put all that stuff on one cake without it landing me on Cake Wrecks!  So I got C to narrow it down to a figure of Toothless in Mario Land wearing a Tae kwon do belt.  And yes, I do know how crazy it sounds, but the resulting Toothless (How to Train Your Dragon)/Super Mario Brothers cake was adorable!  🙂

These boys also knew exactly what they wanted when it came to the flavors of their cakes.  Since they were both getting 2 tier cakes, they wanted a different flavor for each tier.  C wanted triple chocolate and vanilla, and J, who polled his friends LOL, wanted triple chocolate and strawberry.  Since there was an issue with red dye allergy, I made a fresh strawberry cake with a strawberry buttercream filling!  YUM!

In the end, I loved the cakes.  They were so original, and really represented each boy so well.  I hope they loved them as much as I loved making them!

Nifty Fifty Birthday Cake

I love getting to make birthday cakes, especially when it’s for one of my friends, and extra especially when the birthday party is a surprise but the birthday girl informs me herself that she wants a cake from me! Lol!

My sweet friend Kim is amazing.  She is the wonderful, supportive wife of the senior pastor of our church home in Niceville, FL.  She’s an incredibly talented musician and self proclaimed doo-wop girl 🙂  So I was thrilled to get to the opportunity to not only make her cake but also to design it.  The only instructions she gave me were to make it chocolate and have something musical on it.

I love getting to design a cake for someone, because it’s an opportunity for me to create a one-of-a-kind cake just for them.  But when I’m given complete artistic liberty, I get a little anxious.  I mean what if I pick a beautiful color palette and then find out that the person hates that color!  I like to have some kind of guidelines or inspiration to use as a springboard!  Thank goodness for Kim’s daughter Kristen for picking out a fun and funky invitation that was the perfect guide for my cake!  The invite had these great neon colored kaleidoscope-like star bursts on a black background that I just had to incorporate into my design.  So after a few tweaks here and there I came up with a sketch that I thought was perfect.

So now that I had a plan, I made a delicious triple chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream frosting and marshmallow fondant.  On the day of the party, the birthday girl said that it was the perfect cake and she said that it just screamed “Kim”! And that was the best compliment she could have given me 🙂

A Cake with Monster Energy!

This week’s cakes were kind of crazy but a little fun!  I got to help celebrate two momentous birthdays.  The first was for a 16 year old guy named Grant, who like most boys his age, loves a good energy drink! 🙂

I never actually met Grant, but his mom was very excited to get him a cake shaped like a giant Monster energy drink for his birthday party at Lake Jackson in Florala, AL.  So I set off to make a giant cake that looked like Grant’s favorite drink laying on it’s side.  The cake actually ended up being 4 times the size of the real drink.  My very spatially-aware husband had to bust out a tape measure and calculator to make sure that the proportions were spot on.  He doesn’t seem to think that my “that-looks-good-to-me” strategy is good enough! 😉  I’m glad I have him around for those things.  The cake turned out amazingly well.  In fact when we showed pictures to a friend while at a party at Helen Back pizza on Okaloosa Island, she wanted to know why we were showing her a picture of an energy drink 🙂

Of course the birthday cake tasted just as good as it looked!  It was a delicious golden butter cake with vanilla buttercream frosting and my world-famous (well it’s famous in my head!) marshmallow fondant.  The Monster M and logo were cut out of fondant 🙂

*Side Note*  While searching Google images for other Monster Energy drink cakes, so I could see how others had constructed and designed their cakes, I found a cool Monster drink cupcake from a bakery in Michigan.  It’s actually flavored with Monster!  So what do you think, should I make an energy drink flavored cupcake?  If so, what flavor would you like to see?  I think Sobe Energize would be yummy!
