Backyardigans Birthday Cake – Arrrrrghhh!

Even though the Backyardigans are 8 years old their popularity has not waned thanks to exclusive episodes being released on DVDs. In fact, the last DVD that was released on March 8, 2011 was titled “We Arrrr Pirates!”. Thanks to this latest DVD I received an order based on this theme. The mother contacted me about creating a Backyardigans birthday cake for her son’s 3rd birthday that was 3 weeks away (always happy when a customer orders a cake early so I can fit them in my busy schedule ). She had sent me several pictures of Backyardigans cakes she had found online but when she also saw my pirate cake she wanted to incorperate the map layer onto the cake  too. So I said, “No problem, I can do that”.

I based the characters off the latest episode with their peg legs, eye patches, treasure chest, and hook to complete the look. I ended up spending about 3 hours sculpting the details of all 5 of the characters. How do you think it turned out?

The We Arrrr Pirates! DVD includes the, as yet unbroadcast, episode The “Tale of the Not-So-Nice Dragon” which is a sequel to the season 3 episode Tale of the Mighty Knights. This DVD also includes the season 4 series finale. Now that I am looking at this again, it seems my fish were inspired by the Goldfish crackers that you eat…… I blame my children 🙂

Yo Gaba Gaba Birthday Cake

A local Crestview Mother called that had previously had one of my wedding cakes and requested a Yo Gaba Gaba birthday cake for her daughter Liza Grace.  Specifically, she wanted one that had a fun inside to match the crazy rainbow colors of the characters.  She had found a picture that had incorporated the boombox and the 5 main characters (Muna, Foofa, Brobee, Toodee, Plex) and asked if I could create something similar. As you can see below, it captured the essence of the show pretty well!

So I made a 2 tier cake with the magic boombox and the 5 characters made out of gumpaste.  I focused on making the characters as detailed as possible from the antennas on Plex’s head to Brobee’s dark green stripes. The inside was my confetti cake: buttermilk vanilla cake with Jimmy Sprinkles.I must confess Yo Gaba Gaba is my favorite kids show.  I like to watch it with my 5 yr old daughter and sing along to the AWESOME songs. Example:

“Don’t………… Don’t!………. Don’t bite your friends!!!”

And every year for my husband’s birthday I like to post this youtube video on my husband’s facebook page since Yo Gaba Gaba is amazing!!

Are their any kids shows that you enjoy watching even as an adult? Feel free to check out some of my other cakes with childhood themes from the books of Dr. Seuss, smartphone games like Angry Birds, & every boy’s dream of becoming a pirate.

Super Mario Smash 1up First Birthday smash cake

The mother who ordered this cake was a previous client that had ordered a Dallas cowboy cake for her father’s birthday last year.  Since then, she has become addicted to my cupcakes.  When her son’s first birthday came around, she couldn’t resist getting a cake from me. Unlike most mom’s of one year olds, she didn’t go with the typical theme (like Mickey Mouse, or anything in shades of baby blue).  Oh no, she is way to cool for that, her kid was turning one, so he needed a “1up” birthday cake, Super Mario Brothers style.

Instead of having the smash cake at the traditional first birthday party, she used it for a photo shoot for his 1st birthday photos.

Dr. Suess Birthday Cake & Smash Cake

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of a Dr. Seuss birthday cake would be a tall, whimsical masterpiece with colorful characters and a cake that would tilt and turn towards the ceiling. But, you also have to keep in mind these cakes don’t have an unlimited budget and a 1 yr old has no need for a 6 tier cake that captures the essence of many of these cherished childrens books.

I kept this cake simplified with a 2 tier design that included the unforgettable hat from “Cat in the Hat“, the Lorax & his truffula trees, and the phrase, “Oh the places we will go”. If had more tiers you can bet I would of added some green eggs and ham & more.

This cake was the centerpiece for a book themed party. Instead of asking for presents, all the parents wanted was books for their child, a genius idea! Since most presents are played for briefly and forgotten, books are a longer lasting gift that has numerous positive benefits for a growing mind.

Since Henry was also allergic to eggs, I made the smash cake egg-free, which was more challenging than I thought it would be. Egg beaters are NOT egg substitutes, they are just pasteurized eggs…. so I had to use something else. (To see the differences between gluten-free, dairy free, sugar free and organic click here)

Angry Birds Birthday Cake!!

The popularity of Angry Birds continues to amaze me. First launched on December 11, 2009 the game became Apple store’s biggest hit of 2010. Since then it has been downloaded on numerous platforms over 1 billion times. Who knew the world would become so enamored with the story of angry birds battling the greedy green pigs who had stolen their eggs.

Fast forward 2.5 years and I receive a call at my cake shop for an Angry Birds birthday cake. Let me tell you about it.

It was for a little boy and his father who are both obsessed with Angry Birds.  The mother bought in a picture she found online and I adpated it to make it my own. Incorporating the various colored birds from the game (green, red, white, blue, black, yellow), the slingshot, and the evil green King pig and his minions. The most challenging part for me was to try to capture the sunrise from the game.  I thought of using 2 layers of fondant to capture the color but ended up choosing to paint the cake instead for this. Supreme Pizza birthday cake with all the toppings!!

I was excited a few weeks ago to get a call from a mom wanting a custom cake for her daughter’s 5th birthday. Her girl’s favorite thing was pizza so she wanted a cake that looked like pizza. Once again, I had never made a cake like this but was confident this supreme pizza birthday cake would turn out perfect!

How do you think it turned out? I took the time to actually shred the white fondant into a cheese grater to give the pizza that realistic look. The mushrooms, pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, black olives, and meatballs were carefully crafted to match the appearance of their real life counterpart. Thanks to Mia’s Italian Restaurant here locally I was able to get a pizza box that was generic and just said “From your Neighborhood Pizzeria”. (By the way, this Italian restaurant has amazing cheese sticks).

To achieve the desired appearance of a deep dish pizza crust, I added a light layer of graham cracker crumbs to the frosting around the edge to give the look of a garlic pizza crust. I wonder if the little girl was surprised when she took the first bite and realized it was a delicious tasting butter cake with vanilla buttercream frosting? Here is a close-up of the pizza cake below.

It was a fun cake, and a “pizza cake” to make 🙂 Looking for other birthday cake ideas, check out my gallery!

1980s Themed Dream Birthday Cake!

I love it when a client knows exactly what they want, especially when it’s something that I’ve never done before!  But a mother bringing in a sketch of a cake, that her 12 year old daughter drew, for me to make a reality, now that’s a dream-come-true!  Especially if the cake is a totally rad 80’s vibe themed cake that looks adorable!

Here’s the sketch of the cake!

Caitlin (that’s the birthday girl 🙂 ) drew this in class one day when she was bored.  She said it was her dream, 13th birthday cake.  She kept the sketch.  Her mom had to sneak it out of her room so I could see it.  (Who says nothing good comes from daydreaming in class?! 😉 )

When it came time to pick up the cake, mom brought Caitlin along to surprise her.  As Caitlin was jumping up and down, squealing over her cake, she stopped, looked at her mom in confusion, and asked, “Then, why did we just buy a cake from Walmart?”  That’s right, Caitlin’s mom bought a decoy cake.  Now that’s commitment!

This was one of my absolute favorite cakes to make.  I felt so privileged to be included in the surprise.  Oh and I told Caitlin to come see me in 3 years, because I could put her talent to good use!!!
