Not a cake fan? Maybe you know someone who isn’t? There’s always that one person at the party who just doesn’t care for cake.
It’s hard to accommodate them in the sweets department. I get it. I do. So what’s the solution? How about a rice crispy treat cake? It’s a fun, modern alternative to cake. And it’s less expensive! Continue reading
One of my regular customers called and requested a “Hollywood Themed” birthday cake for her 11 year old daughter. Her party was being held at a local theater and they wanted a movie/Holywood feel for the birthday girl. The mom texted me a picture she had found on Pinterest that was the concept she wanted. The cake was designed well so I stayeed true to the original with a few minor changes to suit the event for my client.
I used a new technique that I found on YouTube to make popcorn out of marshmallows (after watching several). I believe it turned out well and gives the cake a true popcorn feel on top. I was excited to make them out of marshmallows instead of fondant since fondant is not as tasty as these sweet treats. My husband could not believe how realistic they turned out.
Creating a cake that was an homage to all movies was nice since I have designed cakes for clients from movies like Harry Potter, Iron Man, & Batman and Scarface. Speaking of movies, I am looking forward to Iron Man 3 & the next chapter in the Hunger Games series coming out :). I typically drive out to the AMC theater at the Destin Commons for the big blockbusters.
If you could have a cake made after your favorite movie, what would it be?
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of a Dr. Seuss birthday cake would be a tall, whimsical masterpiece with colorful characters and a cake that would tilt and turn towards the ceiling. But, you also have to keep in mind these cakes don’t have an unlimited budget and a 1 yr old has no need for a 6 tier cake that captures the essence of many of these cherished childrens books.
I kept this cake simplified with a 2 tier design that included the unforgettable hat from “Cat in the Hat“, the Lorax & his truffula trees, and the phrase, “Oh the places we will go”. If had more tiers you can bet I would of added some green eggs and ham & more.
This cake was the centerpiece for a book themed party. Instead of asking for presents, all the parents wanted was books for their child, a genius idea! Since most presents are played for briefly and forgotten, books are a longer lasting gift that has numerous positive benefits for a growing mind.
Since Henry was also allergic to eggs, I made the smash cake egg-free, which was more challenging than I thought it would be. Egg beaters are NOT egg substitutes, they are just pasteurized eggs…. so I had to use something else. (To see the differences between gluten-free, dairy free, sugar free and organic click here)
The popularity of Angry Birds continues to amaze me. First launched on December 11, 2009 the game became Apple store’s biggest hit of 2010. Since then it has been downloaded on numerous platforms over 1 billion times. Who knew the world would become so enamored with the story of angry birds battling the greedy green pigs who had stolen their eggs.
Fast forward 2.5 years and I receive a call at my cake shop for an Angry Birds birthday cake. Let me tell you about it.
It was for a little boy and his father who are both obsessed with Angry Birds. The mother bought in a picture she found online and I adpated it to make it my own. Incorporating the various colored birds from the game (green, red, white, blue, black, yellow), the slingshot, and the evil green King pig and his minions. The most challenging part for me was to try to capture the sunrise from the game. I thought of using 2 layers of fondant to capture the color but ended up choosing to paint the cake instead for this. So about a year ago my husband joined a cult….er…. I mean a group of people who do this crazy thing called CrossFit. He would literally get up at 4:30 in the morning to go workout in some guys back yard and come home barely able to move, covered in dirt and grass, and grinning from ear to ear! After that all he could talk about was CrossFit, and the crazy guy whose backyard he seemed to be rolling around in 3 mornings a week!
After 6 months of hearing about this, my curiosity got the better of me. So for Father’s day, I woke up, before the sun, and dragged myself to do some insane workout at 6:00 on a Sunday! (For those of you who are asking yourselves “What is CrossFit?” Let me tell you, it’s hard to explain, but basically the idea is to push yourself harder than you ever have before, doing strange exercises that make muscles, you didn’t know existed in the human body, feel like they’d been put in a meat grinder. At least that’s my definition! 🙂 ) So I spent the next hour stepping up on boxes, doing sit ups with the assistance of a gigantic rubber band, doing push ups and running more than I had run in years! It took everything I had to 1. finish 2. not cry and 3. not throw rocks at all the fit people who kept saying “good job” as they lapped me for the 1 millionth time! But I survived, and the next WEEK I was so sore that I literally thought I would die from it. It was then that I decided to not waste this sore. I was tired of having a marshmallow center, so I went back again, and again and again! I’ve been going for about 4 months now, and the difference in my strength, endurance and just the quality of my life has increased tremendously!
Now you’re probably wondering what in the world this has to do with cake, well I’m getting there! You see the random guy whose backyard my husband and I now workout in, isn’t a random guy at all. His name is Stephen Dalton, and he has a passion for living a healthy life and sharing his passion with others. He has a shed full of wacky exercise equipment like wall balls, kettle bells and ab-mats. And for months, he opened up his “home” (aka backyard) to anyone who wanted to come and get a killer workout through CrossFit for free! So when his birthday began to approach and our little CrossFit family began planning a surprise party for him, I jumped at the opportunity to make him a Crossfit cake. I wanted an opportunity to say thank you for all that he had done for me and my family.
You see, I still don’t enjoy exercising. The “endorphin high” is totally wasted on me. I don’t sweat very much, so I overheat, I have a bad back, and arthritis; I basically have the joints of an 80 year old! But I love the people that have become a part of my life through CrossFit, they have literally become part of my family and I love them all dearly! And Stephen, our fearless leader, our Captain Kool-aid, brought us all together. So once again, thank you Stephen! I hope you enjoyed being immortalized in cake! See you in the morning! 🙂

I have some pretty awesome people in my life, cheering me on as I endeavor to conquer the world of cake. But no one has quite “put their money where their mouth is” quite like my dear friend Merideth!
Seriously, besides my husband and maybe my business roomate, Ms. Sheena Ratliff of Lensflare Photography, I can’t think of anyone who is more supportive of my caking career than Miss Mer-bear! The funny thing is that I have known Merideth since I was a teenager. Our paths crossed a lot growing up, she was my cousin’s girlfriend at one point and we also played softball together in high school, but we didn’t get to be friends until my husband joined the fitness cult of Crossfit! (I’m kidding! I love Crossfit…. ok I tolerate Crossfit 😉 ) Because my husband is my number one fan, and because he talks A LOT about me and my cakes, when Merideth needed a baby shower cake, she couldn’t wait to ask me to make one for her.
Well that was the beginning of Merideth’s cake obsession! She has requested 4, that’s right, FOUR cakes from me in a ridiculously short period of time, and every time I see her she’s looking for another excuse to get a cake. Sadly, for me, Merideth is soon joining the Army and moving away from my little corner of the world. 😦 I will miss her and her infectious laugh, but I look forward to making at least one more cake for her to wish her a fond farewell on her new adventure in life.
Wow! That got kind of sad! Sorry, not my intention at all. What I really wanted to do was to celebrate my dear friend, and share all the masterpieces that I’ve gotten to create for her! First the baby shower cake that started them all, and incidentally made Merideth cry tears of joy when I delivered it!
Merideth must have some seriously fertile friends, because the second cake she wanted was another baby shower cake. This time it was for a baby girl whose room is decorated in brown and pink. So I tried to give her something match it!
Then Merideth’s own birthday was approaching, and incidentally she shares her birthday with one of her close friends. So she began planning a gigantic birthday bash to celebrate and have more cake! But sometimes life likes to take the wind out of our sails, and sadly Merideth decided to cancel the big birthday blow out. But her friend wasn’t about to let her big day go uncelebrated. So her sweet friend Beth, whose husband shares a birthday with Merideth, took the original cake order and made it her own. Since her husband is a firefighter, she wanted a birthday cake featuring the firefighter’s Maltese cross. The cake was based off a picture that Merideth and Beth found online. The flames…. well they were my idea. 😀
If you’re counting, you’ll notice that’s only three cakes, and at the beginning of this blog, I said Merideth got four cakes from me. Well, the final cake was for Merideth! She had kindly gotten so many cakes for her friends, that I was thrilled to finally make a cake for her. As I’m writing this Merideth is currently relaxing away in Hawaii. So in honor of her tropical vacation, I made Mer her very own hula girl cake. Now don’t let the picture fool you. This is a mini cake. Just enough for the birthday girl!
So Merideth, I hope you know that I love you, and I thank God for you and the way you believe in me. And I hope you loved your cake! Come home soon 🙂
